Air Quality Update: February 4, 2019

Dear Elmwood Park Residents:

Please be advised that the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection as well as the Bergen County Health Department/Bergen County Hazmat is continuing to monitor the air quality in and around the scene of the fire as well as into the residential neighborhood adjacent to Marcal.

Additionally, Marcal has retained an environmental company to oversee the process from their side of things who will remain engaged and retained the throughout the entire process.

There are multiple layers of monitoring and oversite involved in this operation that will remain in place until the site is remediated.

To date, air quality readings in and around the area are normal. Monitoring is being conducted regularly and residents will be made aware immediately, if air quality readings become abnormal.

Please feel free to contact my office if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
Michael Foligno
Chief of Police / Borough Administrator

Community Advisement re. Air Quality - February 1, 2019

Dear Elmwood Park Residents:

Please be advised that since shortly after the fire began, the NJ Department of Environmental Protection in conjunction with the Bergen County Health Department were notified and sent representatives to the fire scene to conduct monitoring and testing for hazardous materials.

Air quality monitoring was and is currently being conducted around the site and in the surrounding residential neighborhood.

At no time have there been any readings above any level of concern regarding air quality.

We recommend that residents keep their windows closed as potential flare ups may cause smoke to migrate off-site towards the residential area.

Updates will be provided if needed or if the situation changes.

Sincerely,
Michael Foligno
Chief of Police
Borough Administrator

Dear Elmwood Park Residents:                                                                          December 6, 2018

On December 4th and December 5th, 2018 (2) elementary school students reported that a dark colored minivan with rear tinted windows (possibly a Chevrolet) pulled up to them as they were walking home from Gilbert Avenue School. Both incidents occurred at approximately 4:00 pm on Gilbert Avenue between Speidel Avenue and Elm Street.

The students observed 2 dark skinned males occupying the vehicle during both incidents. According to the victims, the suspects stated to them, “You’re beautiful, do you want me to drop you off.” In both instances the victims ran off and were not pursued by the suspects.

Although these incidents occurred on December 4th and 5th, they were reported to the police department on December 6, 2018 at which time an investigation was immediately started. The facts regarding these incidents were broadcast to surrounding jurisdictions to ascertain if any similar situations occurred in other municipalities.

The Elmwood Park Police Department has added extra patrols, both marked and unmarked, to the area, for the safety and security off all of our students.

If anyone has any information that could assist in this investigation, please contact the police desk at 201-796-0700, option #7. In case of an emergency please dial 911.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this issue or if I could be of assistance in anyway, please feel free to contact my office at 201-796-0764.

A Message from the Elmwood Park Fire Prevention Bureau

To help ensure the safety of all residents and property, there are fire safety codes that all must adhere to. When a new occupant moves into an apartment, private residence, or business, the property must be inspected by the Fire Prevention Bureau to ensure all fire safety codes are met.

Elmwood Park’s Interim Fire Official offers a good general reminder for all residents:
Make sure smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are placed in proper areas (in hallway near bedrooms, on first floor away from kitchen, at bottom of stairs of the basement and if there is any storage in attic). Test all alarms weekly and change detectors’ batteries when you change your clocks. Location requirements can be found in the forms under “Residential Smoke-CO-Fire Extinguisher Requirements”

As winter approaches and barbecue season ends.  DO NOT store propane tanks inside the house or garage.  They should be stored and secured outside at least 5 feet away from a window, door or structure.  NEVER store them in a trunk of a car or closed van.

The holiday season is just around the corner and many of our homes and businesses will be decorated.  Make sure that all wiring and accessories do not overload your electrical outlets.  Limit the use of extension cords.  Every electrical device must be UL listed with a label on them or don't use them.

Keep all combustible materials far away from a heat source or open flame.

Never leave lit candles unattended ... EVER!

If you have not change your smoke detector and carbon monoxide batteries recently, DO IT NOW, and do it every time you change clocks.

Business owners and property managers:

Contact the Interim Fire Official at 201-796-1457 x221 for a Knox Box application, at this time you need a signed application form the fire official, but soon you will be able to order directly on line.  These boxes are mounted on the exterior of the building and contain entry keys for fire department access; they are required by local ordinance.

For additional information or concerns about fire safety, call the Interim Fire Official at 201-796-1457 x221.
