Community advisement from the Chief of Police regarding car burglaries

Please be advised that between April 1, 2018 until August 24, 2018, the Elmwood Park Police Department has investigated fifty-two (52) burglaries to automobiles. After review of the Investigative Reports, the burglaries are occurring across a wide area from Rosedale Avenue to Stone Avenue between the hours of 01:00 until 05:00. It should be noted that in all instances, the vehicles were left unlocked.

It’s obvious that the suspects would rather enter unlocked vehicles instead of risking detection by breaking locks or shattering windows. Please be advised that between April 1, 2018 until August 24, 2018, the Elmwood Park Police Department has investigated fifty-two (52) burglaries to automobiles. Residents are strongly encouraged to lock their vehicles AT ALL TIMES. Residents are also encouraged to notify the Police Department anytime where they observe someone acting suspiciously, i.e. looking into passenger side windows of vehicles, trying car door handles on vehicles, etc. All too often we will receive a call from a resident reporting that their car was ransacked, to learn that either they or a neighbor saw or heard something suspicious the night before and neglected to notify us. We need your help in not only this but detecting and deterring all types of crime in our community. If you see something suspicious, please err on the side of caution and call the police desk. Dial 911 if you feel it’s an emergency or call the main number at 201-796-0700 option #7 for the desk officer.

This agency is conducting proactive measures which include, but are not limited to, proactive patrol, using uniformed police personnel, unmarked police units, plain clothes officers, and planned surveillances of "hot zones." The individuals perpetrating these crimes are intent on not getting caught. A partnership between the Police Department and the community is necessary to have a safe environment to live in. In many cases you are our eyes and ears, and we rely on your awareness and willingness to help to make our community great.

The Elmwood Park Police Department is in possession of video footage of the suspects which was taken from a resident's security cameras and we are actively attempting to identify them at this time. Anyone with information that would assist with these investigations is asked to contact Captain Marc D’Amore at 201-796-0700 ext. 110. Callers may remain anonymous.

The Elmwood Park Police Department will remain committed to identifying and arresting the individuals responsible for these crimes!

Sincerely,
Michael Foligno, Chief of Police
